KÜMO GREUNDIEK / Meyer

One of the last coastal motor ships (coasters) still sailing on the river Elbe, North and Baltic Seas: The "GREUNDIEK" is one of the first freighters built in Germany after the second World War, and one of the first fully welded freighters period.
On January 21, 1950, the ship was launched at the Rickmers yard in Bremerhaven.

Today it is preserved in largely original condition. After a chequered history, it is preserved, maintained, and run by a society with volunteer helpers. It again travels the coast, runs charters and tours, and serves as a venue for cultural and social events.

This book gives and overview of the history of the ship, describes its technology, and portrays in a very lifelike way the work and life on a classic coaster. Witnesses, who have lived and worked on and with the ship, have their say, as does one of the first women to earn a captain's license in Germany and the builder of the ship.

This book is more than just an enthusiast's booklet. It is a thrilling document of the economic, technical, and social development of shipping along the European coast.

Format 21 x 29,7cm, 136 pages, richly illustrated with photos, plans, reprints (documents, excerpts from logbooks, and other nautical books), paperback.
