Some types of bamboo grow up to a meter a day, produce more oxygen than other plants, and hinder erosion through their wide-ranging root systems. The woody, often meters-high giant grass has been used for centuries in construction. In many of its characteristics, it is equal to a hard wood; in toughness, light weight, and elasticity, it is even superior.
