In the 19th and early 20th centuries, some women lived with their families on board small coastal sailing ships, some also on large cargo ships. On the German North Sea coast, there were regions where women were even required to travel on transatlantic voyages.

Ursula Feldkamp has reconstructed the lives of women on board traditional sailing ships of the 19th century and on modern sailing ships of the interwar period on the basis of female testimonies from cargo sailing ships.

"Frauen an Bord von Frachtsegelschiffen 1850 bis 1939" is a maritime cultural history of women's life and work on board.
