With power LEDs visible all around, this is a modern alternative to the traditional pyrotechnic red handheld flare.
It is similar in size to the traditional marine distress flare, but does not require the burning of dangerous explosives or chemicals and instead uses battery-powered LEDs.
The ODEO FLARE MK3 "burns" for up to 6 hours at full beam with one set of batteries. The ODEO DISTRESS FLARE even lasts up to 9 hours. After that, the batteries need to be changed. The batteries supplied have a "shelf life" of seven years. Nevertheless, the manufacturer recommends checking the batteries annually and changing them if necessary.
The visibility range of the red light is three to six nautical miles.
Since no pyrotechnics are used, the ODEO FLARE is absolutely safe when switched off. Powered only by batteries, it can be safely sent by post as well as carried in checked luggage on flights.
Originally designed for maritime use, it can be used in any outdoor activity and is easy to operate: Sailing, hiking, mountaineering, skiing, kiting, expeditions, ...
The ODEO FLARE was developed with SOLAS requirements in mind, making it a real alternative to the pyrotechnic red hand flare. The US Coast Guard is working on the development of standards for electronic visual distress signals (eVDS) as a replacement for pyrotechnic hand flares. The ODEO FLARE also emits an SOS signal during its flash pattern, as described in Annex 4 of the COLREGS (KVR), making it an internationally recognised distress signal.
